When A Paycheck Is Not Enough...

The Miami Herald and Watson Wyatt surveyed 31 large local employers to help provide a picture of what types of benefits employees in South Florida receive. The verdict? The health care costs here are more expensive than other places; but in order to attract and retain workers - especially given the high cost of living here - companies are also trying to provide benefits that emphasize flexibility and convenience.

Jobless Claims Post Sharp Decline

9:10 AM EDT, May 8, 2008

WASHINGTON - The number of newly laid off workers seeking unemployment benefits dropped much more than expected last week. The Labor Department reported Thursday that applications for unemployment benefits fell to 365,000, a decline of 18,000 from the previous week. Economists had been looking for a much smaller decrease of around 5,000.
